How to correctly set binder and column dates for BAS workpapers when using Substituted Accounting Periods

To assist users in setting binder and column dates correctly so BAS, GST Rec and PAYG workpapers calculate the tax year properly.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

When creating a BAS binder that does not cover a full financial year, the Binder Start Date must always align to the tax year start, not the BAS period. The BAS period is controlled separately using Edit Columns. This ensures workpapers such as J50 BAS Lodgements, J51 GST Reconciliation and Wages & PAYG calculate the correct tax year end.

Correct way to set up a December BAS binder (June year end example)

Step 1 – Set the binder dates

When creating the binder:

Binder Start Date: 01/07/2025
Binder End Date: 31/12/2025

Even though the BAS period is October to December, the binder must start from the tax year start.

Step 2 – Set the BAS period using Edit Columns

Go to Settings > Edit Columns

Set:

Primary Column Start Date: 01/10/2025
Primary Column End Date: 31/12/2025

This controls the trial balance period and the BAS data being used in the workpapers.

Where to find the binder settings

In your binder, click the cogwheel in the top right corner.

From this menu you will find:

  • Binder Details (where the Binder Start and End Dates are set)

  • Edit Columns (where the BAS period is controlled)

Tip:

Think of the binder as representing the tax year, and Edit Columns as representing the BAS period you are working on.
